Week 13: Literary Speculation and A Handmaid's Tale

A Handmaid’s Tale is at best a gripping story about the struggle to survive in an oppressive society and at worst an illustration of a speculatively possible scenario. That is literary speculation after all. Alternate histories are really interesting and it's always fun to think about what could happen should some dreadful thing suddenly happened. Personally, I believe that man doesn’t need an excuse to be cruel, just the opportunity. To be clear when I say man I mean humankind, not men. So when the entirety of women becomes a literal baby making machine they are commoditized, with seals of approval and everything. Failing the screening process by being lesbian, crazy, or rebellious is to make oneself a burden to this cruel society. Week 15: The Future, my future...

So, last post of the semester. The future is inevitable, how ever distant or vague. I still think back to when I first came to Ringling and I get whiplash, since it only feels like I've just got here. To think I'm a senior in college... Later it will be fine for me, I both hope and suppose. Of course, nothing will happen if you don't make it happen so I will continue to put my all in my studies and art. Even further down the line who can say what will happen, at least in regards to my life. I can only see so far. But the world has it's future in its history, they say it repeats itself so. World war will come, if not between nations then between our species and the environment. Technology will surely advance, to what level within 10, 20, 50, 100 years I don't think we're to say. Week 6: Heroic Journey and The Hobbit

What’s there to say of The Hobbit that hasn’t already been said? It and the rest of the Tolkien universe kicked off high fantasy as the granddaddy of the genre, fathering such worlds like Dungeons and Dragons, The Elder Scrolls, and the Witcher just to name a few. Although it might have been a radical departure from fantasy in his time, Tokien’s universe became the generic bedrock from which modern high fantasy emerged. This isn’t to say that it’s bland or anything, it became a fictionalized setting which has enough well established foundations in characters, settings and plots that it can facilitate adaptations, fan fiction, and a special place in everyone’s hearts. But I suppose I’ll discuss the book itself though, it’s no surprise that The Hobbit is a more whimsical journey than the Lord of the Rings.
